Many homes and businesses in Dinas Powys and Sully Moors are at risk of river flooding from the Cadoxton Brook and East Brook.
Flooding has occurred previously, most recently in 2012 where a number of properties were flooded in the Barry docks area.
The river catchment, although small in nature, is complex with a number of mechanisms causing flooding. For example, in Dinas Powys, the river channel’s capacity to carry high flows is the main flood risk. On Sully Moors road and surrounding industrial estate, flooding is caused by blockages within the channel that restrict flow.
We’ve undertaken a flood modelling study to assess the river flood risk. We predict that over 300 properties will flood in an event with a 1% chance of occurring in any year. That’s why we’ve considered a wide range of options to reduce the risk of flooding, and assessed each option’s feasibility against constraints, such as technical, environmental, social, cost and benefits.
Many options have been discounted as being unsuitable to reduce flood risk, whilst others have been shortlisted as suitable. Work is underway to understand the overall viability of each shortlisted option.
When will the study be published?
We will provide a summary of our study at a public meeting in Autumn 2017, presenting the options considered and the options we believe are most feasible to reduce flood risk. We will review any feedback received at this session to update the feasibility of the options. We then plan to submit a business case to Welsh Government in Winter 2017 for funding to develop the project further.
We want the local community, businesses and stakeholders to be involved throughout this process. We will keep you informed with regular updates and listen to your views at meetings and drop-in events.
Drop-in event, 8 November 2017, 2:00pm - 7:30pm at Dinas Powys Community Library
At our first drop-in event, we gave you an overview of the flood risk and talked to you about the flood protection options. We explained the benefits and disadvantages of each option, answered questions and listen to your views.
For further details on the scheme, see the information boards used for the consultation event on 8 November 2017.
