Ideas sought for growth and value of Wales’ natural resources

Natural Resources Wales (NRW) is seeking views and ideas on growth and value activities for land in its care - including business development, commercial and recreation, renewable energy and timber sales and marketing.

NRW is custodian of more than 120,000 hectares, or 7%, of Wales's land, including the Welsh Government Woodland Estate, flood defences, and National Nature Reserves.

The organisation has today (Monday 09 February 2026) shared a draft Growth & Value Strategy for 2027-2031, setting out a vision, approach, and high-level commitments to commercial work.

It is also supported by a draft Timber Sales and Marketing Action Plan, which is a long-standing commitment of timber supply to the sawmills and wood processing sector in Wales.

The aim is to grow and value resources to allow investment back into NRW’s core mission so that by 2030 nature is recovering, communities are resilient to climate change and pollution is minimised.

Sarah Jennings Executive Director of Communications, Customer and Commercial for NRW said:

“Our draft strategy for commercial activity supports our mission for nature and people thriving together. Our aim is to contribute towards: renewable energy production, connecting people with nature, green and sustainable growth and improving our forest environment. This will help tackle the climate and nature emergencies we face.”
“We value the input and collaboration from those we work with and the communities we serve. We are excited to hear people’s views and ideas before we publish a final version later this year.”

Staff, partners, stakeholders, customers and communities are being asked to get involved.
